Living and Dying on the Job

“If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord.  So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”  Romans 14:8

Good morning!  Tomorrow marks the twenty year anniversary of the never-to-be-forgotten events that took place on 9-11-2001. Most of the victims of that day died while on the job.  They were doing what God called them to do.  They passed away in the line of duty. Many of them were in the Twin Towers, having started their day behind desks and work stations before those mammoth buildings melted and collapsed.  Many were heroes, trying to get in and out of those towers to rescue others who were trapped or otherwise unable to get out.  Some were on airplanes, having started their day as pilots or flight attendants before the tragedy stuck.  Still others were serving in strategic posts and offices in what one would perceive to be one of the safest buildings in the country: the Pentagon.  But most who died did so while at work that morning.

The central thought for today is not that you should bolt out the front door of your workplace before you die or are killed there!  Rather, it is that whether you live or die today, you are working obediently in your place of calling.  I hope you live.  But what if you were to die while there?  I remember hearing about a pastor who for years told his congregation that he hoped he would die while preaching.  For him, it happened that way precisely.  He stood up to preach and before he could get down, he dropped dead.  What a glorious thing for anyone to die on the job, faithfully serving and fleshing out the personal commission of our Lord.

Paul instructs in the verse above that regardless of whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.  We “belong” to Him.  He says in Phil. 4:21, “For me to live is Christ; to die is gain.”  Can you say of yourself that for you to be there- right where you are at work today- that Christ is being exalted in you? If you should die today or some other day at work, is it clear to those in your work culture that you belong to the Lord or would that be news to your co-workers if they attended your funeral?

Today’s Workplace Challenge:  Reflect on the fact that as you work, you are working as a direct answer to God’s call on you to be there.  Live so that others clearly understand that you belong to Christ; that if you died on the job, you would have been there living out your calling!  Let Him be mega-magnified in you so that whether you live or die, His Kingdom marches forward.  And should you live to get home tonight, enjoy your family and friends and express to them how blessed you are to have them in your life!  Think about it… and make today count for His glory!

One final and important note: Take time this weekend to pray for the families of those lost on 9/11 and died at war protecting our country over the last 20 years. Let's never forget!
