His Work

Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles He performs for people! (Psalm 66:5)

A missionary told the story of the fly and the elephant. He said “an elephant had to cross a wobbly old bridge. A fly caught a ride on his back and, as they crossed, the bridge really shook. When they arrived on the other side, the fly said to the elephant, ‘we really shook that bridge, didn’t we’”. Well, everyone who hears this story knows who shook the bridge and it wasn’t the fly.

Sometimes, we can be like the fly. If not careful, we can take credit for what God is doing and miss HIS great work. Think about your workplace for a moment. What things has God accomplished through you at work? You may have started the business but it was God who grew it into a multi-million dollar company. Perhaps you took part in the research but it was God who brought the medical discovery. You teach special needs children but God granted you the gift of compassion and it is He who leads the children to exceed all expectations. You made the sales call, but it was God who turned the customer’s heart and closed the deal. It might have been you who asked a colleague to forgive you but it was God who restored the relationship. Finally…you may have helped a hurting colleague, but it was God’s grace and power that brought healing. We could go on…

Miracles are happening all around you. They might not be as dramatic as the parting of the Red Sea but they are no less powerful. Just as Pharaoh was blind to the miracles that God performed through Moses right before his eyes, we too can be blind to what God is doing around us. However, when we take off our blinders, God reveals Himself in many wonderful ways. I wonder, do you miss the great things God is doing around you? Even worse, do you take credit for what He does? The Psalmist tells us to come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles He performs for people (Psalm 66:5).

Our workplace challenge is to open our eyes and be careful to give God the credit for what He accomplishes in us and around us. Whether great or small, it is His work and He gets all the glory. He “shakes the bridge” and, like the fly, we are blessed to be along for the ride. So, enjoy the journey but always give Him the praise and the glory.
